About our Founder / Artistic Director

With the God's blessings and our Gurus, Smt. Neelambary Balamurugan founded Arudra in 2018.

Smt. Neelambary Balamurugan is passionate, motivating, friendly, humble, and a person of gratitude. Born in 1980, she grew up in a conservative family, under the guidance of a discipled father and a caring mother. From childhood, the passion for Indian culture, which led her towards learning the classical dance from Bharatanatayam. Even with the experience of more than a decade she is still maturing artistically. She believes, with the blessing of God and her Gurus, it is her responsibility to introduce Bharatanatyam to the next generation.

Born in Pondicherry, Smt. Neelambary Balamurugan began her early education in her hometown and later moved to Chennai to pursue her post-secondary education. She obtained a Master degree in Computer Applications and Business Administration, specializing in Human Resource Management.

From a young age, Smt. Neelambary Balamurugan was besotted with Bharatnatyam, constantly putting in effort to master this art form. The quest to mastery taught her discipline, tradition, and a new found passion as a Bharatanatyam teacher. To share this experience with the new generation, Smt. Neelambary Balamurugan founded Arudra Dance Academy in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, and has been teaching the art form for over 10 years with over 200 choreographies and productions.

She is trained in Pandanallur and Kalakshetra (forms of Bharatanatyam) and performs classical and folk dances at festivals under gurus from Pondicherry, Chennai, Birmingham, UK, and Austin, Texas. She began her teaching career at Arushya Dance School in Austin, Texas, under the tutelage of Guru Nandini Muthyam Venkatam, a disciple of Guru Adyar K. Lakshman.

Kalaanjali 2023Fundraiser In Support Of Autism Nova Scotia

Arudra Dance Academy is proud to announce that Kalaanjali 2023 has raised $2,000 dollars as a profit to Autism Nova Scotia. This would not have been possible without the help of participants, parents, students, sponsors, volunteers, and the community. Autism Nova Scotia expresses their gratitude and they hope more events like Kalanjali will happen again.
